Wills are definately a good thing to have as money brings out the worst in people. If you have items that you want to go to specific people then a will is the best way to make sure that happens. It's best not to expect the people left behind who are grieving to try and work out what you wanted to happen and who was to get what.

As far as I am aware a "living will" is a different thing from a standard "will", in a standard will you tell your executors (the people who read and execute your will) how you want your estate distributed after your costs and debts have been paid off. A living will tells people what to do with you if you are unable to make your own choices, eg if you have suffered an injury that places you in a coma/persistant vegetative state. Do they turn the machine off, do they remove the feeding tubes, do not resuscitate etc etc. Basically what to do if things go badly wrong but havent killed you outright.

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

Best wishes

BearSummer

Yeah, it is kind of morbid to talk death, but along with taxes, it is two inevitable things.

Two years ago, my sister in law (wife's sister) had a stroke while driving. She was 50 years old. It resulted in her sideswiping two cars and finally coming to rest against a utility pole. She lingered in a coma for three months before succumbing to the brain stem injuries suffered from stroke.

For a very organized woman, she had no will, neither a living will nor a last will and testament. It cost a lot of money to hire a lawyer to have my wife declared her guardian, etc.

My wife and I immediately went to another lawyer and had both living wills and last wills prepared. It is a sobering thought and a difficult thing for some people to do, but very important.

I will die of a stroke watching Sky Sports with a half eaten Curry on my lap, then be chowed by my two cats and found 2 months later when my workmates notice I hadn't shown for a while. I somehow find that very amusing. Either that or chowed by Hyena when I pop out for a Jimmy Riddle when camping in Africa. Hey ho

And of course you've made a will before jetting off to get eaten by a hyena. I expect my share of your camera gear by DHL.

Please note, should you win, my "brick" ought to go to Connie boy to whom I have willed that lens of his dreams.

  I'm waiting son ... think of the satisfaction you'll feel looking up and seeing me lovin' that thing!

Anyway, our wills are very simple. Should anything happen to me, my wife will become a very well-equipped photographer overnight.;)

... and if anything happens to her you get a pair of fluffy slippers and a sewing machine

I will have my ashes sent your way   My Afreaka Posse can divide the camera gear amongst themselves after they chase off the Vultures ;)

Well they say that you cant take it with you... however thats not what the egyptians, romans, cavemen, vikings, in fact most pantheists think. So I was intending to be entombed with mine, after all the light in the summer lands has got to be wonderful. Now just have to wonder about getting it across the styx, dryzone 200 should do the trick.

All the best

Auld Yin, you have obviously been well impressed with Dante (not the "King" type).
