Wills are definately a good thing to have as money brings out the worst in people. If you have items that you want to go to specific people then a will is the best way to make sure that happens. It's best not to expect the people left behind who are grieving to try and work out what you wanted to happen and who was to get what.
As far as I am aware a "living will" is a different thing from a standard "will", in a standard will you tell your executors (the people who read and execute your will) how you want your estate distributed after your costs and debts have been paid off. A living will tells people what to do with you if you are unable to make your own choices, eg if you have suffered an injury that places you in a coma/persistant vegetative state. Do they turn the machine off, do they remove the feeding tubes, do not resuscitate etc etc. Basically what to do if things go badly wrong but havent killed you outright.
Plan for the worst, hope for the best.
Best wishes
