I read great things about this lens and bought it with a 400D body this week.

I plan on buying either the Tamron 17-50 2.8 or the Sigma 18-50 2.8...

If you own one of these and the 50mm 1.8/1.4, does the zoom perform as well @ 50mm as the prime?

remember that a 50mm lens on a 400d will act as a 80mm lens on a FF camera :) i just used it shooting some basketball with my friends and i was very surprised on the focal length. i had to stand wayy back to get everything in the frame!

1-1/3 stops is 1-1/3 stops, so yes, it has its place.

I have the 50 1.4 and I use it when I know I will be indoors with no flash allowed, even though I have zoom lenses that are quite capable.

It's good for low light and, being a prime, will be sharper than the zoom.

I have the 17-50 and still use my 50 1.4. It is far too sharp to be left unused.
I still ocasionally use my 50 1.8 as well.

sure. there's quite a difference between 1.8/1.4 and 2.8 I know that my fifty as well as my new Tammy will both get fair time on my camera...

I use a 17-70 for general walk around but I did have the change to use a 50 1.8 recently and experimented with my small setup for doing portraits. There is no question that the 1.8 is is much faster and more vertsatile in low light and for portraits where you want the shutter speeds to be a bit faster to avoid any blur when or if the subject moves or adjusts slightly. When I use my 17-70 for portraits I do find that I really have to use higher ISO's and keep the lens wide open or almost wide open to get those faster shutter speeds. As always, this is always going to depend on what you are shooting and whether it is indoors or out, high or low lighting, but I am really seeing the need for fast primes in portrait work.

Yes, the 50mm 1.8 is a great lens and it has it's place. I find myself using it more often than not indoors. So much so that I am thinking about a wider prime. Plus it's sharper than my 17-70.

nowadays i feel i could live without the walkaround zoom and just use the 50mm/1.8 and the 85mm/1.8 instead. i will consider getting the 30mm to get a bit wider perspective, and if i really need wider, then move on to a fish-eye or a UW zoom. i find myself shifting towards primes....

erm, think you have this the wrong way around, assuming FF is an abreviation for Full Frame

50mm lens on 400D will be 80mm (50 with x1.6 crop)
50mm on a full frame camera is 50mm

Although the "Nifty-50" will never replace a good W.A zoom, it is very useful in low light shooting and also small in size which makes it super portable, so I keep it on the camera often. For what it costs, worth keeping it. Oh, did I mention, It's sharp! :)

Prefer the 50mm f1.4 over the f1.8. The colors are much better, lens less noisy and can shoot at f1.4. I bought 50mm f1.8 for one month and sold it away, and will never consider buying back 50mm f1.8.

Now the 50mm f1.2 is coming out. The new question will be "Will I ever use my 50mm 1.4 again?"

I have the kit lens and the 50, I leave the camera with the nifty strapped on unless I'm doing wide angle. I'd rather use foot zoom any day.

I now use S 60mm 2.8 most of the places I used 50mm 1.8. Only because I can shift to macro whenever required. But shooting handheld indoors, I still use 50.
