erm, no one is really anwering 'Just Be's' original question.... why???

i do not hanve any of the zoom lenses that you mention. I do have the sigma 17-70 zoom, and I prefer it a lot over the 50mm 1.8.

The Sigma is quieter than the 50mm 1.8 (makes a big diffence for me as I like to work as silently as possible. Imagine taking NOISEY photos at a quiet wedding! :O ) and build quality is great on the sigma, and I like the images it produces, and the WIDE end of it (17mm end..) I use the wide end more than anything else and and not really a 'telescopic' kind of person. 50mm on a 1.6 crop camera (i have the 350D) is just not wide enough for me, but everyone is different. The 50mm 1.8 does not have a 'distance' scale either, which is not entirery a hinderence, but it's omission I find annoying. 50mm is good for portraits, but I am not a 'portrait' type of person either : )

all the best with your desicions...

I also have not got any tests of the 50mm end of the Sigma, but when I get home (erm, tomorrow night) I may try and take a few sample shots, even thoguh it may not be worth it, as you have not mentioned the 17-70mm as one of your options : ) perhaps the other chaps with the specified zoom lenses ( Tamron 17-50 2.8 or the Sigma 18-50 2.8 ) can take some sample shots at the 50mm part of the zoom and compair to the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 ?...

oh, and since getting the 17-70mm sigma, the 28mm 1.8 canon and the 12-24mm tokina, I have not used my 50mm 1.8 :( I have not used 50mm 1.8 for perhaps 1 year :)

I love both my 50mm f/1.8mk1 and 35mm f/2 lenses... sold all my small zoom lenses. Heck, both of them seconds as nasty reverse macro lens!

well I had the 50mm 1.8 and I got the tamron 28-75 2.8
I got rid of the 50 1.8 because it really wasnt that great from all the hype. it missed focus alot(sent it to canon and was still same when i got it back), felt really cheap, to me it was basically useless at 1.8 and I never picked it up again after I got my tamron. I sold the 50 shortly after and never missed it. I am sure the 1.4 version woulda been a different story.
I like to get my hands on the sigma 30mm 1.4

My gear

R7, 7D, Canon RF 14-35 f4L, Canon RF 50 1.8 STM, Tamron 70-200 G2, Canon 100-400LII, Canon EF-RF
