So It's Firework Time Again Soon

I've done a few searches and the general advice is choose a nice background (if possible) shoot wide open, vary the exposure time and check the results. Oh and ise a tripod!

Is it best to open the sutter as soon as they fire? Any other advice?

Small aperture, shutter speed of a few seconds - enough to capture a couple of bursts without blowing out the sky. Shoot against the sky or a predominantly dark background. You are capturing trails rather than anything else. Open the shutter as soon as the first rocket begins to rise, wait a few seconds or until there have been 2/3 bursts.

There's LOTS of threads here, and LOTS of info on google. I posted about half a dozen times how I do it, an advanced search will find it.
