Hi all,

Finally got round to getting myself this highly rated lens after working with the Kit lens on my old 300D for so many years. I'm just about to get the 24-105 F4L at the end of the month (pay day ;) ) and the 70-200 F4L to complete the F4L trilogy, in the new year.

Sorry if this sounds like a newbie "L" question  What is the distance scale for?

I thought it was supposed to show you the hyperfocal distance but it only moves when I rotate the aperture (focus) ring. It does not change when I change the focal length.

Most directly for that sort of lens for hyperfocal focussing (external link)to maximise depth of field for landscape work etc.

If it was a prime you would also have a depth of field scale also to aid this. This would be a number of fstops marked either side of the focus index on the lens barrel indicating the DOF for that fstop against the distance scale.

Obviously for a zoom this can’t easily be done so you will need to use tables. However I still have a FD trombone action zoom with lovely depth of field scales marked up the barrel.

However the very short focus arcs of AF lenses make these traditional uses difficult to use.

Thanks for the feedback folks! Much appreciated. I'm now looking to get the 24-105 and70-200 I would like to be imported ;-)a

Motion_projekt, I'm looking forward to the "freaking sweet" performance of my 17-40 lens :-) I'm not too interested in the extra stop or 1.5 stop the 2. 8 may give although like you, I may come to regret this ;-)a

curiousGeorge, thank you for the feedback and direction. I've already been to high street stores and sampled the lenses I would like to buy with a 5D body so also long as they are ok, I'll be happy, thanks again!

Lester Wareham, thanks very much for the technical info. I'm looking to print the DOF scales from vividlight so hopefully I'll get close enough :-)

You might want to look at the one I use, its set for typical EF lens marked distances and designed to be compact for use in the field. You fold it in half to get a double sided credit card sized thing.
