Does linear sharpen only work on pics take with the D30? Will it work on G1 pics?

No, you won't get any benefit from using Linearsharpen on a G1 file, since G1 files have no more than 8 bits-per-channel.

However, maybe give my Photoshop action SmarterSharpen a try. It is based on sharpening the edges only, which is a recommended sharpening technique. Note that it works for both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
