Hi Stacie, nice attempt here. The colors seem a bit too saturated, especially in the yellow tree. Maybe it's jpeg compression for the web...gotta hate it. Also, you have to watch your crop, as the bottom 3mm's or so should have been left out...seems as though there is some kind of 'fence' in the shot, that should be removed?

During bright/sunny days, maybe a polarizer will help bring out the 'deep blue' of the sky, and also make those puffy clouds in the background 'pop' from the picture. Don't know if you have one of those, but it seems to help me...sometimes...hehe. I am not perfect...far from it.

Otherwise, looks like a nice and peaceful setting. Thanks for sharing. Hope I helped a bit?

Compression really did kill on this one. Thanks - I noticed the crop after I posted. Grrr...

I've been thinking about a polarizer, but they seem so expensive. On Flickr, I updated some of the pictures to have a deeper blue, but not sure if I overdid it. Except for sharpening, some of the pics didn't need any editing.

Yes, any and all comments are helpful. Thanks!

Stacie

A CP filter may seem expensive, but it is essential when shooting outside, especially on a sunny day. You can get a decent Hoya 77mm for your 17-40 for a round $75. If you're going to be shooting outside with a nice lens like that, it deserves to have a CP filter attached. ;-)a

Right now I have a UV filter on my kit lens and I seem to get more lens flare with it than anything else. For the 17-40, I ordered a 77mm HAZE UV-1 FILTER.

Should have spent the money on a CP filter instead. It's MUCH more valuable to you shooting outdoors than a UV filter.

I agree with JT. UV filters don't really help, unless they are on to protect the lens. CP's, on the other hand, allow you to 'brighten' up the colors, within the picture. I would check to see if you could cancel the order on the UV filter, and go with a circ. pol. Or just buy both, if it makes you comfortable having a UV filter on, to protect the front element. Also, if you decide to get one, make sure the CPL a thin one, so that there is no chance of vignetting.

Good luck.

Yes...something along that line...though it has to be a thin one.

If you are still unsure, give B&H a call...and explain to them that you would like a 'thin' cpl. filter, for the 17-40mm.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to keep the UV filter and add the CP to my Christmas list :-)

Here's a copy of the picture above with only cropping as processing.

Right on. Maybe you can get some portraits of the trees, closer to the house. The crop is nice, as well.

good luck...and hope to see more.
