Work out if your PC does USB2, if not get an adaptor and a USB2 card reader. I think you can get SATA or IDE card readers too, which might be cheaper/easier.

Sorry I am confused here.

First come first. Is this a general habit of all pretty ladies to be impatient Song4themonn? (Assuming that avatar picture is yourself).

1- Please let me know first what kind of time are we talking as "So long". In other word for a completely filled, for eg 2 GB card, how many exact minutes is your usual upload time?

2- If you don't know if you have SUB 1 0r 2 port, you can easily find it. I was going to put you some instruction, but guess easier to refer you to someone else who already answered this common question. Use this
L I N K . (external link)

3- Please pay attention that your PC can have both sub 1 & 2 ports on same board. So did you try to Check speed from other usb ports? (Assuming you have usb2 cable and port).

Let us know the right stuff so that you can get the right answer.
I won't be surprise to find that all you are complaining is only inadequacy of today's technology that may literary be answered tomorrow.

haha, how would you get the idea I was impatient? hehe

Well a full 2GB card takes me about 20-30 minutes to upload onto the PC and that does seem quite long to me

I will take a look at the link you gave me and check the connections, thanks

Thats running at USB1.1 speed by the sound of things, 2Gb in 20-30mins is very slow, should only take you a few minutes to transfer a couple of gig from a CF Card (it varies depending on size and qty of files that you have packed into those 2GB, one large file would transfer a bit quicker than lots of small files) but on the whole if your transferng the files via USB2 the limiting factor is the CF cards read speed.

USB 2.0 is rated upto 480 Mbps which equates to about 60 mega bytes transfer per second (conversion of mega bits to mega bytes) fastest CF cards are only rated upto 23 mega bytes read speed so thats the limiting factor ... unless you have something thats dropping it down to USB 1.1 speed in which case the CF cards speed wont be an issue because USB 1.1. speed is very slow !

Unless you have something unusual going on it will be one of these

What kind of reader are you using? I bought a GE reader a few months back that said it was a Hi-Speed 2.0 reader. It took about 10 minutes to download a 1GB card. A few wekks ago I borrowed a friends reader that was a Hi-Speed 2.0 reader and it took about 3 minutes. I have since bought a new SanDisk reader that also takes about 3 minutes.

I've never timed it but my iMac never takes that long. I'm using a card read built into my printer which is USB2.

By the way the Mac with Aperture is great for storing and cataloging photos.

There are several possible reasons. The mentioned speed for a 2 GB card must be either a USB 1 reader or a USB 1 port at the computer.

I upgraded my USB reader too and the reading speed increased that I download 4 GB (SanDisk Ultra II) in 9 minutes, which is not "high speed", but I can live with it. The reason is that the motherboard in the computer has not the fastest USB support. That's another factor of speed. It can reduce the maximum speed to the half of other boards.

A further reason is that the card reader is connected to hub and many other USB devices are connected to this too. This slows the transfer too, can even produce some stupid errors.

USB is demanding a lot of CPU resources, if your computer is not the fastest and you do other things parallel, it slows down too.

The fastest way of reading is a firewire card reader, but they are expensive and you need the firewire port.

Good luck

two things come to mind.

First, 20 to 30 minutes, with 8mp pictures, is exceedingly slow. Has to be USB 1.

I've got the SANDISK Extreme IV card and Firewire reader and I can read a 4gb card in approx 2 minutes, and that's 16mp pictures, or files that are twice the size of yours.

I said "two things come to mind" up above.

The second is, I recently took a four-day workshop on Raw workflow. Sounds like you could definitely use it. During it, the teacher emphasized that speed is not what counts, but accurate, bit for bit transfer does. He personally does not believe in the superfast cards and readers. Personally, I do.
