Does this look sharp to you? I also shot with my 24-105 and that blew the 10-20 away. I am wondering if it is because the 10-20 is further away from the subject. Anyway- what do you think?

The camera was on a tripod and I have a few like this. I believe I was at f8. What should I do? Send back to Sigma?

One other thing....I took some pics of a notebook indoors and the writing was extremely sharp (handheld). This does not make any sense to me.

hard to tell sharpness from size of post. Post at 800 px on longest side and then a crop of 100%

Dante,

How do I do this in CS2? I have the picture on my home computer and can modify and post from there.

Thanks

I had the same problem posting. I made a photobucket account and I use the link to my photos there. Makes the resolution much better. If you are on the internet now, see if you can start an account, then upload the photo to it, I make it 600 dpi 4x6, I save as a JPEG file, like I am printing it at Costco. After downloading onto the site, see below the picture there are links. Click on the IMG and it will highlight the link. Ctrl C to copy and reply here by Ctrl V. That should send the link to the forum.

Good luck!

It does look fuzzy the way you posted it.

here is 100% crop. No idea what is meant by 800px though:

btw- this could be from a different picture in the series. They were all shot within the same burst.

This was on a tripod?, I would send it back or return it if you just recently bought and exchange it for another lens.

Was the image quite underexposed? If you corrected the exposure a fair bit in Photoshop or during the RAW conversion you will see significantly more noise and a loss of detail.

WildWolf,
It is very difficult to qualify lenses without some type of controlled environment. The following is a method I have used with good results.

Make a test pattern. This can be an 8.5X11 sheet of paper placed in landscape with some words in the middle. The letters should be about 1/4 inch high, black, bold and printed with a good printer. Mark each corner with a black brush pen so they are very obvious.

Mount this target on a board at the same height as your tripod mounted camera and give it good lighting.

Mount the first lens on the camera and adjust for lowest number focal length.

Adjust the distance between the camera and target so the target just fills the frame. Take your first picture. (should be high resolution)

Increase focal length to the highest for that lens or some intermediate point on a zoom lens with longer range. Repeat the above step and take your second picture. Continue for as many test shots you may want.

View the text on each picture at 100% and note the sharpness. For example, this test will very often indicate if a lens is soft at full zoom and can be used to compare two lenses. Text can also be placed along the edge of the target to determine edge sharpness.

If the lens(es) produce sharp text under these conditions, pictures in the field should be sharp as well if adjusted properly.

This is by no means the most accurate method although, with the minimal time and material required, fairly reliable results can be obtained.

Good luck
Arvid
