Yup, they replaced, calibrated and cleaned the whole thing for the price they quoted. It looks brand new, slides smoother and the IS thing inside and the USM motor are silent now. Before I could hear it spinning and the IS would kind of klunk into focus. You could hear and feel it. It's soundless and I can't feel it now.

Hopefully you will be happy with the repair job.
A recent test by liquidstone showed a really good copy of a 100-400 beat 2 different 400 5.6Ls wide open at 400mm. (better overall) Now that would be nice :)

I wonder if the 300F4 (I hear the non-is is sharper so say that one?) is sharper then the 400 F5.6 with a 1.4x, and sharper then the 100-400 at 300mm.

I got them to go down to $375 CAD because they have to remove the connectors to replace the chip anyways.

All in all I paid $1000 CAD

$1000.00 plus $375.00 seems about 1/3rd what the lens costs new? ???
What did I miss? as this is the best price I've ever seen for that lens.

If it's the 300 in his sig., it's the 300 f/4. $1150 US new at B&H.

OK, I got out to take some pics in the wild today, and here's what I got from the 100-400L after the repair. I'm happy, but you decide. These are straight from the camera, no PP other than resize for the board. The EXIF is intact.

they look pretty good. It'd be nice to see a 100% crop to see how sharp it is tho

1/250 sec at 400mm. I'm assuming these were taken with a support?
If these were hand held at 250 sec, they are terrific.

Here's a zip file (external link) with the two originals, in JPEG LARGE right from the camera.

No support, hand held, but using the 550ex Flash on the camera.

I'd love to see something with a tripod. Just a fence post would be good.

It'll have to wait til tomorrow now, it just got dark, and it's about 25 degrees outside. ;)

I would like to know what would be a real test for this lens though.

Now I'm wondering if they helped this lens or not. Just took a whole bunch of images with streaks like this in the background blur. After testing, I have to say it's the lens, not the camera, cause I can see it in the image and in the viewfinder, and on both a D60 and the new 30D. The only thing comparable in the in foucs background is a stick that shows a tripple image at the top right corner of the cable box. Anyone ever seen anything like this before?

I tried it with IS on and off, and no tripod, but a solid brace.

But, I think I found the problem. Maybe the same problem I've had from the beginning, at least some of it. I found another post (external link) about this by searching Google. It turned out to be the filter they were using, but their images showed the same exact lines at the same angle. ;)

I ran out of daylight so can't test it til tomorrow though.
