Need POSTPROCESSING HELP. How can this be made better???

This is a shot that my friend took last saturday at the beach. He took the shot at a very high shutter speed with negative exposure compensation. The picture came out a fairly dark :(. How can this be made better in PhotoShop (Am a newbie so do not know much) ?? Please do mention the steps and if possible do attach the postprocessed pic....

A good start would be to look at the levels. Press CTRL L (Apple L on a mac I think) to get up the levels and try the auto setting failing that try dragging the right and the centre bars left.

ok so i did a simple fix in PS CS2. heres what i did:
adjusted shadows/highlights
and then adjusted the levels

in photoshop go to Image>adjustments to find levels and shadows/highlights

Here is my version. Since it was split lighting and a very harsh deep shadow, I used screen in blend modes and a layer mask. I also cleaned up the color balance.
