Just ordered my first dslr(10d body only) Wondering what glass I should look into. Maybe a few ideas of a little bit of everything?

I love basically everything. Macro, Tele, etc. Just wondering what would be good to invest in with a minimal budget.

Shutter22,
How much $$$$ can you part with? ???
Which is more important, macro, portraits, landscape, wildlife? ???
You could just get the cheap 50mm f/1.8 as a starter. Another cheap but good lens is the Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 For telephoto there is the cheap Canon 75-300 f/4-5.6 lens. I personally started with the 28-105 & 75-300 when I got my first DSLR (a 10D).
Enjoy your new camera :)

Definately need to know what the budget is, and what the priority is... MACRO? Portrait? Tele?

One could get the 100mm MACRO. It is a tele, MACRO, and can be used as a portrait lens.

Currently, 300, but it's sure to change very soon. (By 2-300) I'm not ready to go out and buy some L(That's what I have canon loving parents with some sweet glass for)

I take a lot of macro. Landscape is deffinately my downfall. I mostly do portraiture and photojournalism type work(I love parades public events, high school sports)

I'd suggest get the 18-55 kit lens, and save for a dedicated macro lens - the EF 100mm macro would be my personal favourite.

I might be wrong but I don't think EF-S lenses fit a 10D ?? so the 60mm macro and also the Sigma 70mm are out.

The kit lens takes a lot of poor-mouthing but it really isn't that bad, and is a good alround sure-enough EF lens for people on a budget. I still use mine when I need a lens that is light and small/ discrete. Or expendable...;)

Most people get a basic zoom , like the kit lens, then a medium tele zoom in the 70/75-300mm range when starting out, then a macro. I'd suggest a flash unit as well.

I get the impression you can borrow nice lenses from your parents - what stuff do you have access to, and how often? This could influence your decisions on what to get.

But ultimately, I'm afraid your budget means you need to stick with the basics - they perform well enough, and you'll enjoy using them while you save up though.

I will be the last one to recomend an L unles you are loaded. Too many great alternatives out there. ;) I would use the glass of your parents until I found the focal length that I liked, and what type of photography you want to focus on. For me I like portraits. I usually shoot from a distance to give my subject space. I want them to be them-selves. So, I am getting a fast tele. 85 mm 1.8.

If your budget can bear it do get an EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM.
That seems to be a very popular lens with younger photographers around here.

 Oh Petkal...I'm assuming you suggest such a starter lense because it will take years to get birding shots with a 10-22:lol:

Shutter 22...I'd have a look at the eflense sticky at top for starter lenses...it was a great place for me to start.

50 f1.8, sharp, fast, cheap. Aside from that if your on a tight budget,

Walk around- Canon 28-105 f3.5-4.5 Great for the price

Tele/Macro- Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 Not the best, but takes care of macro and tele on a budget.

EF 50mm f/1.8 II for starters

EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM if you have the cash

EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM is a little [affordable] something in between

Get the 50mm 1.8 for approx. $80. It will really show you what your camera can do. Super fast and sharp. That's what I did. Then borrow from the folks...

Have fun!

6D, 60D, Various L and non-L Lenses and more gear than I have time to use. ;)

Close, Steve and Shelly:D : it takes years to acquire the wisdom of realization that small is beautiful. Besides, them young bucks can carry those big lenses with ease. Us old clucks can barely carry our own selves, let alone any additional burden.

Hey, folks.... The original post said that the camera being purchased is a 10D. That cannot use any of the EF-S lenses. Yet, several of you seem to be recommending the 18-55, 10-22, etc. Those won't work on a 10D. :p
