Kind of an odd question, as I don't really have any issues with any of my lenses, but has anyone ever sent a lens in, under warranty, to get it "calibrated" for the heck of it (or just to see if it made a difference)? I see so many posts about people sending lenses in and being extremely pleased after getting them back. Just curious, assuming one doesn't mind paying the postage and can be without the lens for a bit, would it be worth sending in a lens for calibration, especially while it's still under warranty?

I just recently got my 70-200 f/4 back from non-warranty replacement of the AF-MF coupling.

Perfect now.

I sent in my new 85/1.8 because I thought it was backfocusing. Either Canon didn't do anything to it or the problem is with my 10D because it still backfocuses. :-(

Seems a number of people want to know... but apparently no one has actually sent one in without a known-issue...?

slin, did Canon tell you if they'd done anything to it or found anything wrong?

My 70-200 f/4 L has been sent for calibration for three times. The first two times were under warranty and the third was out of warranty.

The lens is front focus!

Here is the summary for the result after calibration:
1st time, Canon HK claimed the lens was within specification, and therfore nothing change.

2nd time, I sent in the lens with some sample photos showing front focus. Canon adjusted in. It was a bit better but still at the boundary of front focus.

The 3rd time, I confirmed using a 1.4x entender that it was consistantly front focus. I sent it in and need to pay for checking. It was adjusted.

The lens is now dead on focus when using a 1.4x TC but still a bit front focus without the TC.

I don't have the repair order in front of me. I believe they said that focus was checked. They did indicate that if there were still focus issues then the body could be the culprit and to send it in.

I haven't bothered to do that. I've owned the 10D for many years, and it's generally served me well. I may, instead, retire it.

As to sending in a lens for calibration, I believe alot of people have done it.

I got the lens back today.I had sent it in for calibration.I was never really satisfied with it from day one.But I thought it was just user error.Guess what it wasn't:) .Focus was adjusted as was center and tilt.No charge-under warranty. What a difference, images are much sharper and the colors seem to pop more.Very satisfied with service.12 days door to door.Sent on Oct 12th recieved back on Oct 24th.This was sent to the New Jersey repair center.I am in Connecticut.

Glad to hear jej! You should post some before & after pics...

It doesn't seem like a bad idea, really. The worst that would happen is you'd waste money postage. The best, you'd get your lens calibrated free under warranty.

Again, I've never noticed anything wrong with any of my gear, but I don't real do any "formal" tests either.

I sent in my EF 28-135 IS for calibration. I wasn't really happy with it from the time I got it then i actually did some testing on a table cloth that was checkered and found that it was actually front focusing by a couple of inches as well as (in my oppinion) was way to soft. After I got it back a couple weeks ago it actually does what it's supposed to do. At first i just thought it was me not knowing how to work with the IS but now I see the light.

It's really interesting to see people getting sub-par lenses from retail. Hopefully, it's all isolated incidents. Guess Canon's QC needs some freshening up. That or whoever handles the packages does so roughly.
