Thanks to this site I've read alot of information and reviews to help me on my next lens purchase.
I have my 50mm 1.8 that will be my portrait/ sharp low light lens for now.
I want a lens with sharp optics and great IQ, and a wide end for landscapes and indoor shots and fair low light ability.
I can get the 17-40L for $680 and the 17-85 IS for $500.
If the 17-40L is sharper than the 17-85 IS, I'll be OK without the extra range of zoom.
If the 17-85 IS is nearly as sharp, I'll probably go for it and take the added range.
I assume that both are about even in low light productivity 4 vs. 4-5.6 (w/IS).
I have looked at Sigma and Tamaron. Both are favorites in the 17-50 range at a lower price than the Canon. Both have their share of small issues that the Canon doesn't seem to have according to most reviews which makes sense for the price they command.
I'd like to stay with Canon, not just for the name, but for the all around IQ, build and performance.
Also the edge on the 17-40L would be that I could use it if I upgrade to a non-crop camera.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!
