If you are just starting out you should consider Photoshop elements. A new version came out and is only $69 at some of the electronics stores. If you feel the need to upgrade later you can do so tp CS2. if you go this route check out www.academicsuperstore​.com (external link)

with kids, try to shoot at their level but slightly higher not a lot like as in your height against her's because it gives too much distortion. As for the background...i think gaussian blur it slightly, or re-shoot it - im sure your she would be willing to psoe the same haha

Well... I'm not a professional like the others, but I resolved this problem knowing the flash range of my camera. So, now I go a step back before shoot.;)

Hey, I tried something too, simulated bokeh by lens blurring the background, and part of her body using depth mapping with gradients on an alpha layer. :) Also adjusted the levels and such.
