since the fiddy is sitting open at 1.8, would it be good to take pics of sunsets?

Sunsets will likely be too bright to shoot wide open anyway, and you'll definitely want to stop it down to say f/5.6-8.0 to get the sharpest image.

wouldnt f/8 not give me the sharpest image. I thought that the lower the f-stop the less things are in focus. Most of my sunsets was taken at f/12-18.

Thanks Mike. Although this particular shot was taken with the POTN Nifty Fifty that is floating around the world, not my particular copy. Either would have taken the same photo though.

shooting wide open with the nifty in that situation will get you a softer image than a stopped down shot.

I believe most lenses will always give you the sharpest image stopped down a little...

You're confusing DoF with sharpness. The smaller the aperture, the greater the DoF. Most lenses don't reach maximum sharpness until at least f/5.6 typically. So beyond that you're in the "sweet spot" until you get to f/16-22 or so, where diffraction starts to adversely affect your image.

Besides, no point in having a huge DoF unless you have foreground objects in your scene. The horizon/sun is for all intents and purposes "flat" and at infinity.

To really maximize the DoF where you do have foreground objects, set your lens to the "hyperfocal distance."

this is an example of sharpness wide open vs stopped down...
ps. the 1.4 loves light. my shutter maxed out on the first few shots.

7.1 is super sharp vs, 2.8 even
