My lens came today hoorah, and had a couple of hand held tests, first impressions are the speed in which it focusus is excellent,,, nice sharp pics but I myself need to learn how to use it!

oh yes this might sound like a stupid question but how do you crop at 100%?

Love the color tonality on these, The Sigma is a lill on the warm side, but that's how I like it! Good stuff and enjoy your new toy! ;)

Looks good :)

I like the 17-70 alot. www.pbase.com/evandavies/sigma_17_70 (external link)

100% crop just means that you cut the image to a certain size instead of scaling it.
So you end up with a smaller portion of the original image.

Unless you specifically know you NEED the fixed f/2.8 and don't need the reach of the 70mm then that 17-50 looks great. I almost got it. I wanted a good walk around lens and although I love shooting with a 50mm it limits me a little for general use and the 70mm reach was worth it to give up the fixed f/2.8.

Those are very nice pics. Great example of what the lens can do.

I'm trying to talk a friend into getting this lens with the 30D but he's eyeing the Canon 17-40 f4 because of the double rebates :)

Unless you already know your needs or have other lenses that you need to complement then I personally think that the 17-40mm, although it is outstanding, can be limiting in range for some. For me it would be and I would find myself changing lenses more often than I would like. The beauty of the 17-70 is the range of the lens and the fact that is stays pretty sharp all the way around. I have not seen any soft focus or soft edges of any kind.

Rebates and double rebates are nice but I am not letting them dictate my spending or swaying my opinions. If I am interested in something on the rebate then great but it's not the end of the world if I don't cash in on double rebates. I got my 30D on the rebate and I don't think I will be getting any Canon lenses that qualify for rebate. I just ordered my 50mm f/1.8 and I see other Sigma's in my future. If anything, I am hoping to get a 580 EX as my double rebate item.

I could not agree more. I can see this lens staying on my 30D most of the time.
