would you trade your EF 24-70 f2.8 L with the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS?

Too easy!

No... cause I just threw down for the 24-70. I've never used IS either, so I may not know what I'm missing - which helps with the decision. For most of what I shoot, IS isn't really that useful so... just like the outcome that most of these threads end up at... I guess it depends on what you shoot/need.

yes, i do have the 24-70 and do weddings -- most of the time in dimly lit churches that dont allow flash! sometimes i find myself wishing i had IS. i bump my ISO as high as 1600 to get my shutter speed up but thats when noise starts to be a problem. hmmmm, DECISIONS DECISIONS!

thanks for your comments A01 and whiskaz.

Assuming I had a body I could mount the EF-S to... No. ;)

Keep in mind that IS only stops YOUR motion - not your subjects.

I would never trade an excellent EF lens for an EF-S lens, regardless how good the later is.

I might trade it for a 24-70L IS, but that's another story...

If your doing weddings, I highly recommend the 17-55! I just sold mine because I am converting to 1D bodies. It is a superb lens. If you have a sharp copy of the 24-70 I would hang on to it... in my experience they are hard to come by. I went through three copies (24-70) before just giving up on the lens.

for a crop body, I would and I did. Why not? I made back every penny I spent on the 24-70 and now I get more pictures because of the 17mm focal length and the IS.

A lens isn't an investment, it's a tool, get the tool that works with your other most important tool - the camera body.

I wouldn't bother soliciting advice like this on a forum. Just read the reviews and look at your camera. Both lenses are known as outstanding. 24mm on a 'standard zoom' for a crop body is just way toooo limiting for myself.

I have the 24-70L and it is the best big brick of a lens I've ever used! No. And I don't buy EF-S lenses because I'm going FF soon (I hope).

I have both lenses and I say YES!

The 17-55MM IS is just as sharp as the 24-70MM L and a lot more flexible IMHO.

That said, I have no plans to get rid of my 24-70MM L. It does have its moments e.g., when I shoot portraits of my grandkids :)

However, the 17-55MM IS will be the last lens in my kit if I ever have to sell off my lenses

Suzy,

You can have your cake and eat it too by keeping a crop camera and someday having a FF as well. In the meanwhile you are denying yourself the pleasure of some outstanding lenses: the 10-22MM EF-S and the 17-55MM EF-S IS to name two :) And, don't forget the Sigma 30MM f/1.4...my best prime

No way. If I could only keep one lens, the 24-70L is it.
