I've lived in Vancouver for 30 years and I've only seen this bird (Varied Thrust) once or twice. Well then again I've only been interested in avian world for the last 5 years. So I could be wrong:p I had only one blurred pic .

It reminds me of this song:

"Ibon man may laying lumipad

Kulungin mo at umiiyak

Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag

Ang di magnasang makaalpas"

EDIT: My apologies. If I translate this in english. I'd ruined the poetic meaning.

Ang bayan kong Pilipinas,
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak.
Pag-ibig ang sa kanyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilag.
At sa kaniyang yumi at ganda,
Dayuhan ay nahalina.
Bayan ko, binihag ka,
Nasadlak sa dusa.

Koro:
Ibon mang may layang lumipad,
kulungin mo at umiiyak!
Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag,
Ang 'di magnasang makaalpas?
Pilipinas kong minumutya,
Pugad ng luha ko't dalita,
Aking adhika,
Makita kang sakdal laya!
[edit]Translation

My country, the Philippines,
Land of gold and flowers.
Love is in her palms
Offering beauty and splendour.
And to her refinement and beauty,
Foreigners were enticed.
My Country, you were enslaved,
Mired in suffering.

Chorus:
Even birds that are free to fly,
Cage them and they shall cry!
How much more for country so beautiful,
Would She not yearn to be free?
My Philippines that I treasure,
Cradle of my tears and suffering,
My aspiration is,
To see you truly free!

Cheers,
Tony

Those were trying times. A few years after the people power. I returned home for the very first time since leaving the country as a teenager. It was in '89, I remember seeing bullet holes on hi-rise buildings in Makati area. I can't remember who started that coup.
