I'm debating on which one of these lenses I should get: a EF-24-70mm f/2.8L USM or EF-24-105mm f/4 IS USM.

I know the 24-105 has IS and is f/4, but what about sharpness, focusing speed, etc. between the two?

I plan to use the lens for outdoor public events.

Price is not an issue, but I don't want to buy both :).

I love my 24-70L, but if you're shooting outdoors, the f/2.8 isn't as critical, I'd go with the extra range of the 24-105 L. I tested the 24-105L about a year ago and didn't really notice much difference in AF speed.

Big apertures aren't just for low shutter speed shooting, but it can help you isolate a subject. 2.8 will give you better isolation if shooting wide open.

I would say that IS isn't as critical if shooting people, outdoors or indoors. You can always handhold a 24-70L at the minimum shutter speeds your need for that purpose. (Unless you do forensic photography... :)

I would go for the 24-70L if shooting people (particularly if you will be doing it professionally). A faster aperture to help freeze motion, better DOF control and bokeh, etc.

I owned both lenses and in the matter of sharpness, focussing speed and build they are both top notch.
But the 24-105 for me was the better one in IQ.

Good luck.
