Ok, I shot portraits for a youth sports league, and most everything turned out great for about 500 of them. But for about 30 kids, something went wrong. Some it was the kid just never gave a decent look, about 10 the camera freaked and I got some real heavy slow shutter drag with a flash that was not bright enough. My instinct is to contact the teams and let them know I would like to shoot those players again before their next games.

Have any of you all had this situation, and if so, how and what is the best way to deal with this. It kind of bits because I was hoping that I was done shooting. I hate to admit I did something wrong, but I feel publishing less then the best professional results would be very damaging too. Your ideas and thoughts would be great.

Cheers.

You shot about 530 kids and 30 came out less than great? I would guess with shooting that many that would be expected. By all means contact the coaches and reschedule a reshoot at their next game. In the long run the extra work and effort on your part to deliver the best image you can will speak for itself.

IndyJeff is right on (as he often is). Your dissatisfaction of your results and the offer to correct will go a long, long way to build your rep.
This is one of the first steps toward professional work.

Some it was the kid just never gave a decent look,

Like you have any control over that? Take two shots per kid?

with a flash that was not bright enough.

Same distance to the subject? Or more? In a situation like that where you should have control over everything technical, I'd use M for everything.

about 10 the camera freaked and I got some real heavy slow shutter drag

Maybe you bumped the mode dial? I've done that. The fix was to set Av & Tv, the closest settings to M, to an exposure close to the "right" one.

By all means contact the coaches and reschedule a reshoot at their next game.

Look upon it as an opportunity to increase your sell-ratio. ;)
