Do people actually buy the kit lens seperately?

So I see a lot of threads made by people trying to sell their kit lenses, and it's got me thinking. Do people actually buy the EF-S 18-55 seperately? To me, I couldn't picture anybody buying this lens, unless they got one with their body. I've thought about selling mine as I have 2 that can replace it, but I haven't because I didn't think I would have any takers. Yet, I don't see a lot of bumps or anything on these threads, leading me to believe that they might sell fairly easily.

Thoughts/comments?

A lot of people who arent too particular about shooting wide angle - but still want one just in case like the kit lens.

Esp. given that its the cheapest to go to 18mm and not very bad at the widest end.

i bought my kit lens used for $50. i figure i need it only temporarily, so i bought it seperately. just take the used copy, use it for a bit to figure out my prefered zoom focal range, and sell it back to the market. the kit lens sells fairly easily in the 50~70 range. you might press your luck starting aruond $75, but still do-able when no one else is selling the lens.

Sold mine for $50. Maybe it was to unix04? Nah, it was a few years ago.

Sold mine too, so there has to be some demand. It's a cheap, do-all lens. For the price it's not bad. I personally have the Canon 100mm macro and the 50mm f/1.8, so I didn't have much use for it, but if you bought your camera as a "Body-only" deal and needed a good, cheap starter lens, the kit lens looks pretty appealing.

I would! I think it's an AWESOME deal, I'd just treat it as a 18mm f/3.5 prime for a crop body!

Or even a 18mm f/8 prime for wide angle tripodded photography! Very sharp for <$100!

I have sold 2 of the 18-55's, both went for about $140 each and sold as soon as I listed them. Theres always a martket for affordable lenses like these, I think the kit lens is a pretty decent lens for the $$ IMHO.

I bought one for my holiday as I got my 20d body only. I see no problem in the kit lens. Nearly all the photos in my California gallery are taken with it.

Just to add to what another said, I've seen some awesome landscape shots taken with that lens. I bought it when I had no close lens, for $50 or so, then sold it with my Canon 300D so the buyer would have a lens. Now I have the Sigma 24-70 for close-ups.

There was a bidding frenzy over mine on eBay, which sold for $85 plus shipping.
This person was replacing their damaged copy. Its actually a great lens for the money

You can get the kit lens new from B&H for like a 100$, why on earth would anyone spend more than retail new? Some people are just stupid.

I think they are talking about the USM version.

Non USM is about $75
USM is about double that
