the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 is so well liked even compared to the Tamron 28-75 2.8?

I understand it is a very good lens, but from what I have read unless you need the wide end, the Tamron is much better for around the same price.

The Tamron has constant 2.8 plus the resolution charts are way better.

In this thread https://photography-on-the.net …hread.php?t=231456&page=2

It was advised to get instead of both the 17-40 L and the Tamron 28-75.

What am I missing?

There is no definitive "lens to get." It is all subjective. I would personally only go with Canon; others would go for something else. Neither is wrong or right. Try out the lenses you are interested in at a local shop and see which you like best for your needs. I have heard good and bad things with both lenses.

Choosing a lens is never an easy task.

Good luck with your decission :D

I'm not sure I understand your question, but some might be willing to forgo the constant aperture of the Tammy in exchange for the broader zoom range of the Sigma.

Well that is kinda my question.

The Tamron appears to be superior as a lens in every way except it the extra at the wide end.

For the same price?

If the Tamron is superior in IQ then surely that's all that matters? If the Tamron's range is what you need then go for that. If you need wider buy another lens or save money and buy the Sigma.

Or forget both and buy the 24-105 which is an amazing lens. I never use the Tamron any more.

I think the Sigma 17-70 is recommended because its such a good all rounder. Good range, close focus, IQ and price. That doesn't mean its a "better" lens than the Tamy but its a good walkabout choice.

But, the Tamron turns the wrong way - makes me lose pictures when I am in a hurry.

1- Canon
2- Nikon
3- Sigma, Tokina, Tamron
4- Maybe Sony or Carl Ziess

now i am not sure if Leica is the best of all these or it is in between of the above list.
Canon has all the necesary lenses with IQ and Range and more, only the price is the problem.

for many, 28mm on a crop camera is simply not wide enough. 17mm suit us better. it just depend on your needs.

It's recommended highly because it is a great range from wide-medium tele (tamron isn't wide at all), fast-ish aperture, fairly compact/lightweight, good close-up ability, sharp IQ, good color reproduction, fairly compact/lightweight and doesn't break the bank. What's not to like?
