Today I have tried to shoot for 1/2 hr whatever birds I could find, using the 180L for the first time as a birding lens.
My very initial impressions are quite favourable.
* The AF is fast enough for pigeons. seagulls and bigger birds. However, it does not have the initial focus acquisition "lurch" or "snap" that the 200 f/2.8 would have. That is to be expected though.
*As far as IQ is concerned, the lens can shoot with the best of them. Appears to be on the level of the 200 f/2.8.
* The lens feels well balanced/not nose heavy and does not weigh heavy in hand.
Here are a few original, unprocessed shots.
