Ever wondered why you shouldn't sell off the rights to your work? Read the story (external link)

I'd read that.

...said he has been inundated with calls from people who think he died.

"Lets all call the dead guy!" Interesting mindset there?!
Now it's going to be looping through my brain all day! ;)

Hehe I was wondering same thing when I was reading this. Why would anyone call someone who died? To check if he's really dead? "Hi there are you dead for sure? You know I just wanted to check" :)
Otherwise this is really good sample why you should keep copyright to yourself. And in this case it really doesn't matter, if one of them was just imposter... point is somewhere else, and I guess Jeff posted this link exactly because of this.

ok you two, if I have to point out the most important part of the article I will :)

The living Paul Vance estimated he has made several million dollars from the song, which was recorded by 16-year-old teen idol Brian Hyland, surged to No. 1 on the Billboard charts in August 1960 and has been a pop culture staple ever since.

The song -- about a bashful young woman in a skimpy bathing suit -- has been used in such movies as "Sister Act 2" and "Revenge of the Nerds II" and was more recently revived in a yogurt commercial.

"It's a money machine," Vance said.

Yeah calling a dead guy was kind of weird but, I am guessing they thought maybe someone would answer and tell them yes, he croaked.
The point I wanted to show was how he kept the copyright and look at all it made him.
On a photography note, Thomas Witte out of Cincinnati went to shoot a kid that played football with, literally, no legs. SI picked up the shots and his phone began ringing off the hook. I can't remember the exact figure but he made something like $12 or $14,000 off that bank of images.

I turned Nike down 2 years ago to shoot their sponsored team at the Little 500 at IU in Bloomington, money was one issue but the real deal breaker for me was they wanted the copyright to ALL images I shot on this assignment. The money we could negotiate on, the copyright was not negotiatable. They wanted it, I said sorry I won't do that.

Think about the cat that shot Clinton and Monica Lewinsky in her little beret at that meet and greet rope line. I would love to know how much he made off that one image. Probably enough to buy a decent house.

Keep that copyright!!!!

Jeff nothing to worry, I knew you didn't post this because of wondering why people call dead guy. But I guess all three of us posting in this thread till now, know what real point of article is :D
And since this "keep copyright" thing is clear to me, and I guess to Frank too, we started to pick up on more "interesting" part of article

... wouldn't they have been calling to offer their condolences to his widow?
