A friend of mine is considering the 17-85 but only if he compliments it with DxO Optics Pro...which can automatically correct things like barrel distortion and help to reduce things like CA...along with other tweaks. The price of the lens and software is still less than an L lens.

The more I think about it...the more I think that having F2.8 will be the most important thing. I'm going to be needing a lens for weddings and an extra stop or two will really help to freeze any subject movement. Nothing like a great wedding shot that is ruined by a blurry hand.

This was taken this evening at ISO 800 of my puppy with a little USM and curves (no noise reduction); it was shot in jpg with a picture style and I'm more than happy with the quality of the 17-85 for the price.

Runs and ducks whilst pot shots are take at my photo :)

I use the combination of the 17-85 and DxO, and barrel distortion / C.A. are easily fixed through software to the point that I don't even think about them anymore. Also keep in mind that the Sigma is only F2.8 from 17-20mm. Still, for the price it is hard to beat the Sigma.
