I've been noticing something, 1 stop really isnt that much a difference. Yeah yeah I know when you need the little extra speed it is but I find even f2.8 to be rather slow using natural light sometimes. When shooting in daylight f4 is too fast in AV mode, where it shoots at 4000 so its all about need. I find a 16-35 f2.8L to be just too much money for landscapes because f2.8 would rarely if ever be good for landscapes or other things wide, even night time. JMO though others like it just fine but for me it isnt for me. (and I could buy one, I just dont need one)

I would normally agree with everyone else and say 24-70, but if you find 85 on a 5D too narrow (?) then maybe 16-35 is more your style.

Both are good glass, but it all boils down to how wide you really want to go. 16mm is ridiculously wide on the 5D (but I love the ultra-wide FOV), but the 24-70 may be more your speed. UWA lenses are great for a lot of things besides landscapes also. It offers a very interesting perspective on closer subjects. Try it!

I vote 24-70 over the 16-35 as it's a much more useful range. An alternative might be the 24-105, but you'll likely want a couple of fast primes to use with it in low light. Might want one with the 24-70 as well. F/2.8 is good, but f/1.4 is really low-light.

Buy both. Just prioritize. RIght now, i'd say the 24-70 would be your best bet for now.

A great kit in zooms:

16-35/17-40
24-70
70-200

Wow, thanks for all the fast replies. This forum is great! I've got the 24-70 scheduled for delivery on Monday :D Hope it'll be good. I've been reading up and practicing today with the 85. It's a nice little lens :)

You did the right thing. There is really nothing to replace the 24-70L. But for long periods of hand-holding, it gets heavy! It is probably a necessity, however, for your type of photography. It is always a winner wrt IQ. Have fun!

Congratulations. Good choice, now if you want wider, you can follow up with the 16-35! Give the lens some time sicne it'll be a heavy bugger, but you defintely should love that.
