This is a very fine lens. I had never thought to use a macro on a bird before Petal's wild adventure with the 180L....then I thought..."if he can do it...." but this is my only macro. These aren't technically perfect but I'm amazed at the lack of CA and at the sharpness...white is a bear with CA, which is why I chose this goose...

Those are sharp! The white of the goose looks perfect on my LCD.

Macros will do that for you. I think Snir once chased a heron with a 100mm macro if I recall correctly?

I don't think I heard of anyone else chasing birds w/a macro (but I wouldn't put it past Snir for sure  )! I just wanted to see what it could do and was quite shocked at the outcome. It's very nice for landscapes as well, which shocked me. As soon as I process the photos, I'm going to post a landscape thread with this lens...

The telephoto end has been well conquered... the ultrawideangle and FE end has been covered by Petkal....now it's up to you and the macro to break new ground and lead us into a new era of revolutionary bird photos :D

Actually, macros are known to be ultrasharp, more so than other primes, plus a whole lot of other desirable attributes (flatness of field, full correction of aberrations, sharp corner-to-corner when I use them as field photocopiers etc.etc.). You can shoot wide open and get stopped-down kind of performance.

I am particularly fond of the EF-S 60 macro. It has an MTF chart with performance rivalled only by Canon's supertele's - the kind I'll no more be able to carry than afford!

Maybe I should take the 60 out shooting. On the 1D. :D

I see CA my dear. I live in CA. CAlifornia!! HAHA. I loved my 90sp when I had it.

Why is a macro a macro? MFD! so why would it NOT be good at capturing anything greater than 2 inches from your face? :):):) In particular, this tammy lens is very L like in color and contrast. well IMHO anywho!

That's what I was thinking. I didn't have a polarizer or anything on this...it was just a flat out IQ test...even for the landscapes...and it handled amazingly well. And I'm the QUEEN OF L's...because I rarely find anything that shoots as well as the ones I've got...but this little lens is one of my new best friends (and I've owned it since spring...sigh).
