I guess Ive been lucky so far (knock on wood) but I actually use my old eyecup from my AE-1 Program on my 30D. I got so used to it I was thrilled to find out that it fit :)

I've gone through 10 of them in a bit over 5 years, 10th one today. I'm getting tired of buying them. The little hooks always get a crack in them eventually then the eyecup gets loose and eventually I either replace it or lose it. Same thing happened on my eyepiece diopter correction lens so I guess that makes 11.

I'm pretty sure that the eyecup design is the weakest link in the whole EOS system. I wish that Canon would focus all development efforts on making better eyecups and finally solve this problem before designing more L lenses.

Lost? How does one even do that?

I've lost none.

I have broken one on a 400D though, stuffing the camera into a bag with a laptop one of the retaining clips broke - still, I didn't loose that one either :)

It happens when the eyecup is getting loose and you have the camera hanging from your neck. The eyecup rubs on my chest and eventually I look down and the eyecup is gone.

I went the last option - it was the most applicable but I don't help to keep anyone employed making eyecups.
I've lost every one off all my cameras.
Once they're gone, they're gone - simple.
I can live without them. They don't affect the image, so I don't care that much.

Never was a problem when my 400D had the broken pin... ah well... everybody is different I suppose.

Never lost one and never will. They are hard enough to get off even if your trying. I have the anti-fog one on now and that cost $60.00 here so they better make it strong and hard to take off.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I dropped my eyepiece, with extender attached a few years ago, but luckily a mate was standing next to me & picked it up. I now use Tenpa & KPS magnifying eyepieces (on ebay), which are screw clamped onto the eyepiece flange, so never come off! They also magnify the viewfinder image by 30-35% so make manual focussing easier.

Yes, the eyecups for cameras like the 1Ds Mark III, 1D Mark III or 7D (they use the same) have a different design. As you say, unless you press your fingers on exactly the release points, on the sides of the eyecup, you almost need a crowbar to remove them.

But the simpler cameras, like a 400D or so, have a different design, which falls off much easier. I've had an eyecup for my 400D break. It still worked, but one of the retaining springs broke. It was almost enough to hold the camera upside down and shake it, to get the eyecup to fall off.
It fell off a couple of times, but I noticed each time, so I never lost it. Then I bought a new one, with the springs intact.

I've lost two so far, and I'll be danged if I knew where and when. I know both were at the zoo, but both times I shot the whole day without knowing they were gone. Luckily somebody invented eBay, where I could buy a handful really cheap and stuff them in the bag, just in case I lost another one.
