Nice shot. Did the polarizer actually do anything?

It darkened the sky at the top.

The wee boy's silhouette caught in the reflected sunlight was well-timed in #2. You would also get best polarisation at 90deg from the sun, and facing direct would have probably only really helped to reduce the light hitting the sensor by a stop or two.
