As I'm sure most of you are aware, Raw Shooter have been bought out by Adobe and as far as I know, nothing has been done regarding the development of the software to accommodate new models of camera. I use the premium version extensively and I am thinking of upgrading from a 350D to a 400D purely because of the LCD size. Does anyone know if the files from a 400D will be recognised by Rawshooter Premium?

I also want to know, because I thought of upgrading with a XTI, but the incompatibility with RawShooter Premium was a major concern for me.

Adobe Lightroom is suposed to be it's remplacement, but I don't like it and consume too much resources.. Maybe it's because it's sill in beta?

I would expect RSP would NOT support 400D as it is a new file format. LR Beta is starting to take in elements of RSP, Beta 4 has some familiarity for RSP users!

Slightly off topic. Can someone explain to me why everytime Canon brings out a new camera it has a new RAW format? The file size will be different sure, but why the format.

There will be no more updates for RawShooter Premium. Not sure about RawShooter Essentials (Free Version) but the Canon 30D is the last supported camera in their updates.

Because the sensor size is different. Also there's different metadata (parameter settings, etc.) stored in the file, which will change where the base data is stored. It might be possible to come up with a standard format that would read the different sensor sizes correctly, but handling the changed metadata would be difficult, at best. Think of it as the equivalent of Sigma trying to reverse-engineer the EF lens mount. And we all know how well old Sigma EF lenses work on new EOS cameras.

Uh oh. I was thinking about buying a 400D this weekend. What RAW tools are available for users of this camera?

Skip

You always have Lightroom - I think Beta 4 works with 400D?

And there is always DPP that comes with it - not bad by all accounts although personally I don't like the workflow.

Adobe has released a beta version of its PS Raw plugin. And Google has buggy support for Picasa (the photos appear tinted pink). But Picasa is updated pretty frequently, so I expect a fix soon.

And of course Canon's included DPP program works fine.

Here's another vote for DPP... If the software that came with the camera can't open them the world is in a sorry state... OK, we all know it is, but you know what I mean...

I use Adobe's DNG converter with the 30D raw files then Rawshooter opens them fine. It's just an extra step in the workflow and I've kind of gotten use to it.

Would you kindly run through how you do that?
Cheers, DA.

the Adobe DNG converter reads the 30D raw files. Just select the directory to look in for files and the output directory and click convert. Rawshooter can then opens the DNG files the same as raw files from my 350D.

Do you lose any information/quality from doing so?

No, DNG is a non-propriety (well its Adobe but you know what I mean!) RAW-type format. No data loss.
