Hi all,

Can someone tell me if one of these is a good buy ? Are they still serviceable by Canon ? I have read they are not as good optically as the MK 2.

Any thoughts appreciated as I have the oppertunity to lay my hands on one.

Cheers,

Marc

I have one .... love it ! And it is my "workhorse" lens ....

I can't answer the "...not as good optically as the MK 2." comment as I've never shot with a MK 2 - or the newer IS versions. As far as I know, they are not serviced any longer by Canon ... and someone please correct me if I'm wrong .....

But I don't think you can wrong with a Canon 400 f2.8 lens - whether it's a MK I or MK 2 or an IS version ..... they're all terrific lenses ....

Of course, the better the deal, the better the lens will seem to be, too, I think ..... ;)

Most of the shots on my SS member page are with the 400, and here's another recent shot from my 400 2.8 .....

It'd be hard to believe that Canon couldn't repair them .... it may come down to just having parts (or being able to get parts) for an older model lens that's not manufactured any longer ....

I really don't have a solid, factually based answer to your question, though. I saw your original question posted on SS, too - maybe those people have a definitive answer for you on both questions ....

Thanks Cecil, as you will have seen I got a fair few responses on SS. As it turns out the MK1 issue wont be of concern as I managed to get a MK2 version in the end for a decent price.

Cheers,

Marc
