Have you considered the 17-55IS f/2.8? It's a nice blend of everything you are looking for in a lens from portraits to landscape, fast, Image Stabilized, and great optics.

17-55 - I have considered it - in my dreams. Unfortunately, I have a budget of $1,500 and with that I need to get the 30D and the best lens possible. With the 17-40L I will get a great lens and after the rebates keep it under the budget.

I have the 50 1.4 and it's a beauty. You'll get great bokeh and you'll be able to shoot in low light. It pretty much lives on my camera lately. As for the 17-40L.... it's the next one on my list... to replace my kit lense.

The problem with 4 kids and the 50 1.4, they may not all be in focus. :) So, I recommend the 17-40 for now and get used to the zoom and then the 50 1.4, which is an outstanding lens. The 85 is great for sports and tight portraits. You'll love any of the 3. I have them.

@montreal:

I think I am going to do the opposite. I am hoping to pick up the 17-40L first and then in a few months grab the 50 1.4. After that I need something 70-200 but that will probably have till wait to Xmas.

Thanks everyone for your helpful thoughts. I think my first lens will be the 17-40L and then the 50 1.4. Again, thank you everyone for your thoughts.

Oh, the spending never ends. I thought I was done getting the 20D, then I got 3 L's in 5 months. I haven't spent anything since I got the 70-200 f4. I have 4 sons and 2 are still in elementary school. I use all my lenses still.

I don't blame you. I needed the 50 1.4 to shoot my sister in law's wedding. Otherwise I would have reversed the order also. I ended up loving the 50 1.4... but I can't wait to get the 17-40 :D

Here's another vote for the 17-40L and the 50 1.4 on your birthday...you won't have distance but you'll have two of the finest lenses canon makes...the 50 1.4 has L quality for the non-L price. Later you can add a zoom for the longer end, but these both would be so useful...though as someone else already mentioned, be careful to avoid distortion (on portraits) by getting too close with the 17-40. It shoots great portraits, (just check out this thread)
