Canon ef-75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens PROBLEM ?

Just got my supposedly never used lens in today, and tried to test it out.

It's making a funny sound as soon as it's installed on the camera, sort of a whap whap whap sound, and when you get it focused in and pull the trigger the shutter sticks. The noise never stops. Since it's an ultrasonic lens is the noise normal? The sliding action in the lens feels stiff as well.

I am a noob so please forgive my constant questions.

Thanks!

Jim

YIKES! Doesn't sound normal. The UltraSonic Motor is pretty quiet...

I think so as well. Just tried the lens again, noticed that if the lens wasn't installled all the way in until it clicked that it wouldn't make the noise, and the shutter will work --- but it won't focus. It will focus when the lens is installed all the way in until it clicks.

Something else is strange. The lens starts making the noise even when the power/setting button is still in the red area.

davvet2,
It's for sure not the quietest lens out there :) However lets assume its working, then what you describe sounds like the camera is not locking on a subject to focus. It will hunt close and far to try to lock. Try again in a brighter situation to see if it still hunts for focus. I have no idea what equipment you are using ex. what camera? ??? But if its a DSLR then you probably can see the focus confirmation light.

"Whap, Whap, Whap" is NFG.
Should go "bzeet, bzeet, bzeet."

I tried the lens on several Rebel and EOS film cameras, and it does the same thing even in bright sunlight.

I paid by PayPal, and intend to get a full refund -- the lens is defective in my opinion.

Thanks,

Jim

Paypal? Did you buy it on Ebay? Ugh. How much did you pay? It goes for only $180 new from reputable online dealers. It's a low end lens and you get what you pay for.

I didn't buy it on Ebay, and I paid a lot less than $180.00 for it -- heck Amazon has it NIB with a $10.00 rebate for $160.00 plus free shipping.

I am a noob, and as a noob I will sometimes make mistakes, but hopefully only make them once. This was a "deal" on a brand new in the box never been mounted lens, and I bought it. Turns out it's defective. Luckily I paid with my credit card.

When I was checking on the lens I was told:

davvet2,
Can't help you with a manual but I can give you a few tips.
Don't ever try to manually focus when AF is on (you could strip the focus gears if you do).
Try to use faster shutter speeds when doing hand held photos.
To answer your other question: Yes its a good lens for its cost. I have taken many good photos with it myself, so go and enjoy it

Now understand something here, Hellashot :

I am not aspiring to be a professional photographer, I'm not qualified to carry a photograper's bag for him/her, I came to this website to learn. I am retired military and restore antique cars and hot rods as a hobby. I want to be able to take decent photos of the cars and parts I sometimes sell. (I sometimes buy and sell on Ebay, yes Ebay -- it's not a dirty word- I've done well there as a buyer and seller and am not ashamed of it). What may not be good for you may work perfectly fine for me. I have no interest in tying up hundreds and maybe even thousands of dollars in cameras and equipment no more than I will use them. :)

Then it does sound to be defective :(
Unlike some, I still believe it to be a good lens for the cost with over 3 years of use.
Hope all goes well.

Thanks, John -

I believe your opinion of the lens is correct, both in usage and diagnosis.

As said before, I don't need a $500.00 lens for what I'm doing. My very picky wife has this type lens on her Rebel G and has used it for several years with no complaints; if it's good enough for her -- it's good enough for me.

Don't tell my wife that !!

Somebody must've thought it was OK, because they bought it!

After this defective one is returned and I have my money back, I will look for another lens.
