So I got the 17-40 F4L a couple of weeks ago, didn't have a chance to give it a proper christening because of the weather but was impressed so much with the quality of the images, hardly any PP required, I then went out a few days ago and got the 24-105 F4L IS!

WOW! The IS has amazed me! I was going to get the final 70-200 F4L, but I may get the IS version instead.

A couple of close shots. I think I need to learn DOF all over again! Have a look at the detail on the lions nose! Would never have got this on the consumer lenses!

Mate, you will "feckin" love it!!!!! Switch the IS on when you need it (my battery went after 300 shots), go to the long end and you will be amazed at what you can now capture compared to your 300.

I was in Perranporth the other week, lovely place!

Yeah.. it's a fantastic lens, agree with you there. Only thing lacking is a f/2.8 aperture.

Get a nifty too, you'll love it...!

Guess I'm the only non-Brit here so far (got some great shots of Elizabeth and Phillip when they were here two years ago - our city is named after Queen Victoria).

The 24 - 105 is a beaut.

I agree with Rammy, the IS takes some power, but it works so well that I leave it on, and just watch my battery.

The lack of f/2.8 hasn't concerned me too much as I rarely shoot action, and after all, 2.8 is only one stop faster than f/4.

Just came back from my morning walk with 50 shots, quite a few at 1/12 and 1/15 all hand held. I'm finding that a tripod might be a waste of money and a nuisance to carry in the field. Have on occasion been able to use 1/5 second, but that's pushing it a bit.

All in all, the IS gives me two stops, so losing one to f/2.8 is no big deal. For action shooters, it would be.

Another 24-105L lovin brit here.
I put off getting one for so long and every time i got a new lens the 24-105L was always at the back of my mind as a "one day when i win the lottery" lens.
.....and then the Amex card hit the carpet ;-)a.
Im so glad i did it. i dont mind the cost (although i cant really afford it) but i was always trying to justify getting it as i had a Canon 28-105 USM MKII, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 so i didnt really need to get the 24-105L. when i got rid of some of them it left a gap and so the rest is history.
Im now looking to get a fast prime, either a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or one of the Canon 50mm lens's.

I'm shooting a party with my 24-105 f4L IS tonight. It's my lens of choice when shooting festivals, faires and parties.

Gee, I've been missing out on all the parties and didn't even know it. Thanks for cluing me in. Think I'll look for one tonight.

Let us know how it works - I believe that this is one very versatile lens.

CCP900:

Battery pack? Just arrived home from buying an Ansmann BP-511A for half the list price of a Canon BP-511A. Camera won't be any bulkier or heavier.

hi glenn, well if youre asking me if its gonna be a lot heavier then the answer is definitely but then again it makes the camera a bit more stable with the 24-105 on. And it really allows me to go wild on shooting....i just keep shooting and dont mind whether the IS is consuming my juice or not

Well I am still trying to learn how far I can go with the IS and I don't think I am getting the DOF as well as I used to with the kit lens.

Is the DOF completely different with an L lens compared to a kit lens? Here is a close up with IS of a tree I was shooting today. I still couldn't get front to back sharpness.

Im sure the DOF is the same at the same setting on any lens. it will change depending on how much you zoom in or out and how close you are.
If you zoom in to 105mm @ f/4. you will get a very narrow DOF.
Im sure others will explain it better. i do know what you mean though. When i first got mine i kept it at f/4.0 and when i zoomed in i got a very narrow DOF. i soon realsied i had to use a smaller apature a lot of the time when zooming in

Thanks Dave! I've just realised from what you have said, the settings I learnt and used on the 18-55 (at the long end) won't be the same as the 24-105 at the long end! It's nearly double the distance, Doh!
