Metering Question

I am still new at photography and just got a 400D. Can someone please tell me how metering will help me improve my pictures. I have taken a few test shots and didnt see a huge difference, im sure im doing something wrong. If someone knows of a metering 101 tutorial that would be great also. Thanks so much.

Whether you know it or not, you're always metering when you shoot your camera. Whether you deviate from that metering or not is the question.

Go to the public library and read Exposure, part of a set of books on the Zone System. While the full Zone System does not apply in the same way to digital, the theory and practice of 'placement' of the exposure point is very very much a part of digital photography (underlying the axiom 'shoot to the right') and proper metering technique is a key element of Exposure
