Rabidcow, I have nothing to put over the lens and I don't have a filter. You think it's safe to take it out with just the hood? What if water gets on the front element? What about my 30D getting wet? Isn't that all dangerous? The IS is weatherproof, and the 1D is weatherproof, but the 30D and F4 non-IS aren't.

I suggest a 1 gallon plastic freezer bag over the camera, that's what I use when conditions are wet. As for the lens, I don't use filters, and it was completely exposed to the elements. With the hood on, I had no problems, just remember to not point you lens up towards the falling rain and you will not get moisture on the front element.

Sounds good. Can you elaborate on the plastic freezer bag though? And if it begins raining bad I'm guessing it's best to just go indoors regardless or pack up.

Well done kid, that is a damned sensible purchase for what you need and for your age ... tho' that is worrying me a little because really you should be sniffin' glue, terrorising old gran'ma's, disturbin' your parents with Eminem impressions behind closed bedroom doors, and debasing yourself with a long line of trailer park floosies ... well, if media stories are to believed  So, what went wrong?

Beautiful. Great tip, haha. Not sure if I can find a hot water pipe to run (would have to find one, find the owner, and ask for their permission?) BTW, Petkal, you do know that the EXIF in that photo says 180mm and your post says 18mm? Now it doesn't have a wide aspect to it really so I suspect you meant 180mm, but just want to be sure.

Ok, 18 mm vs. 180 mm....in capable hands that should not make much of a difference anyways.
The second tip, that one I have learned from BillyfromBirdKey, is to find a good reliable supply of test targets.

LOL :)

to all the F4L owners: did you get the tripod adapter ring? it seems incredibly overpriced, i mean for a little plastic $120?? or is there some cheaper third party ones?

I didn’t get it with the lens, but I might get it later if I feel I need it. I really would have liked it if Canon put the ring with the lens. Having said that, I think it is better for the lens to be cheaper and not come with the ring, than Canon charging another 100 bucks for the lens and supplying the ring with it :)

Just got the lens today, took Canada Post long enough.

I haven't been able to get out and take any shots because of the damn rain (see my rain thread), but I did play around with it a little bit.

I must say, this lens has the PERFECT weight for a lens of its size. I am so glad I didn't get a 2.8 version, because I feel so comfertable with this lens. I supose the 200 2.8 would be a good chocie for me because it weighs in similarily and is pretty cheap.

Congratulations on the new lens. As I believe was said on POTN, the first step has been taken. Now it is only a question of when you will fall for the 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM L - WHEN, not WHETHER :D

weird looks?.. hmm.. I don't get weird looks. I get curious looks... but, i've long had this theory that women can shoot in public easier than men.. folks aren't as suspicious..

I find this true too. They just don't get it; these days girls as well as guys are equally likely to be basket cases/pervs/nutters/whatever/etc. Equal opportunity and the knife cuts both ways, I have always believed. Good and bad. For better or worse. No offence meant, just the way things are.

LOL, Petkal...

With the lighter weight of the f/4 lens the tripod collar isn't quite as important as on the heavier f/2.8 versions. You can probably get away without one most of the time.

There are also two versions, IIRC - an "A" and a "B" and they're both identical save for the color. Again, you're paying for the white model. Perhaps someone can shed a little more light on this...

Haha. That's pretty funny.

I think my age is best kept a secret, sometimes things are best that way.

I have yet to get the tripod collar. I'm not sure if it's worth it, it's quite expensive in Canada (not that it isn't in the States), and I could pick one up used, but it does seem fine on my monopod + tripod without it. The lens isn't all that big, so I really am not concerned.

Petkal, did I tell you, a few days ago after school when getting a ride home, I saw what looked like a few thousand geese in a green field (they are doing construction and stuff in this neighborhood where I go to school, lots of open land still.) I was so excited, so I grabbed my camera gear, but when I walked outside it was raining :(. I definitely would have had enough space and enough subjects to get some nice shots even with my sigma there, or kit lens for that matter :).

I do have the ring on mine though I bought them together used. It does seem excessive, but with the f4 you'll need it if you're indoors without flash or if it's getting late (because it's getting dark earlier now anyway :()
