feeding the need

ive been using my 50/1.8 for a few group night shots, and despite a bit of CA, it's ok for now. but i was pondering on my night shooting needs, and wondering if i should just go for the 1.4 upgrade. i've only had the 1.8 for a week, and pretty sure i can return it to the store to get the 1.4, and the USM/build of the 1.4 surely increases its appeal.

however, i was also considering in place of the upgrade, perhaps i land myself with the sigma 30/1.4 instead. (would come in real handy when shooting inside restaurants) that way i get a 30, 50, 85 prime set for night shots, the kit lens for day shots, and after some more shooting, determine which 70-200 lens to pick for telephoto.

any advice/suggestions are welcome. (including those that discourage me from buying new lenses! haha)

it's not that i've mastered anything, but starting to get a better feel of the focal lengths i shoot in and in different situations. i've found good use for my 50, but it might be because i have really no other lens besides the 85 so far. perhaps it will change if i get the 30, or as i start to use the kit lens...hmmm...

prime lover huh?... have a chat with Liza she's the resident lady of primes.... My immediate thoughts.. get the 30mm I've been hankering for one myself I do find the fifty too long in certain situations... But, considering the money shelled out there's no reason to not keep it...

It would be nice to have a kit of 30, 50, 85. It wouldnt' hurt if you upgraded the 50.

A very nice lens from all accounts and from shots from people who know how to use it. I'd like one myself. I'd prefer it over the also excellent 35mm f2 Canon.

yes, very much like ryan's (rhinotherunt) prime set! that, along with one of the 70-200 lenses and a walkaround (tbd) would make a complete set! but another $1500 on lenses/hoods/accessori​es... yowzers!! must hold and feel my way through the 30/50-upgrade for now.

yea...i find that due to work and other responsibilities, most of my shooting is done in the evening. primes seem to be the way to go for me. and perhaps 2 fast zooms, one walkaround and one tele. (oh, and a macro prime would come in real handy too!!)

i think i'll set up a wish list and work my way up there. purchasing a new house is still first on my list, and then a new car, and then whatever's left on my camera/alcoholic needs.

a canon 35/1.4 USM (around the ~$400/$500 price range) would've done the trick for me, but no USM and f/2 has got me thinking sigma!
