For those of you that use a 50MM lens (in particular, the 50mm 1.4 version), how many of you use a UV filter on your lens or do you shoot without one all the time... I have a B+W UV filter on all my lenses and I've been thinking about order this lens and wanted to see what others did for this particular lens with respect to a UV "protective ;) " filter!!!

As well, could you please provide a shot of the LENS with the hood on it... does everybody utilized a hood on this lens or not?

Thanks in advance...
Phil

Flipster, I use a lens hood for all of my lenses, worth it's weight in gold in my opinion. I don't use UV filters unless I'll be around water spray or it's really windy in the desert, but my polarizers are on 99% of the time I'm outdoors.

Here you go, hood is pretty compact so I store it in the shooting position. I also use a UV, it's not necessary but it makes me feel better.

I refuse to use filters unless they're ND or circ. pol. I don't need them, and I don't want my quality degraded. I'm not concerned with the glass getting dirty or marked up. None of my lenses have ever gotten anything on the glass. I do, however, use hoods on every single lens, and would never go without on any but maybe the 50. They protect the lens, improve contrast, and prevent glare/flare.

I use a hood, and i noticed a difference immediately, of course it could just be my poor skill lol. I dont bother with UV filter, but i have a polariser for when dealing with reflections or for tweaking the summer blue skies.
I went for the canon hood and the hoya polariser.

Is a filter necessary if you'll be shooting with a non-weathered sealed lens in rain with just the hood on? I really don't want to blow money on a filter, I have a cheap Canon UV filter, but I know that it'd probably kill the IQ on my 85 1.8 for example, and that I'd need a much more expensive filter.

BTW, if your front element does get scratched, Canon can repair it, right? If so, how much would it charge? I'd laugh if it is like the cost of a good filter.

I would highly suggest not shooting in the rain. Neither your camera nor lens is weathersealed. I personally could never chance that much money. Take a peek at rain covers for your camera. Kata makes some nice ones.

Get the hood. You can turn it around backwards for storage so it doesn't take up much room in your bag. It not only protects the lens, but it looks cool and makes the lens appear bigger and more expensive, so you can charge more.

I wonder if you can find these locally. How much would a cover for my camera and lens (I'de like to use it on various lenses though) run? Somebody the other day on this board said something about a freezer bag on their camera or something and using the F4 with just the hood, and being okay as long as they didn't put it in the sky or whatever.

I use a lens hood and hoya SHMC pro 1 UV filters on mine, if you use a filter get the best multicoated both sides.

The filter can cause a small blue ghost of very bright light in frame sources at wide fstops with this lens (external link). However this is an extreem case and the filter presents no issues for most photographic cases.

Now I know why people like the 70-200 f2.8 so much :D

Something like this (external link) would work, I imagine.

From everything I see and read on this very topic I have come to the conclusion that if professionals with lenses costing thousands of dollars are recommending that you use hoods and only use filters when necessary, then that is pretty good advice as far as I'm concerned.

Protecting the lens is a good idea but then again why don't we have protective covers around the entire camera to shield it from the environment entirely...kidding there. You have to be careful with all gear and treat it with respect, and yes, every so often accidents happen and a lens gets damaged or has some dirt on it.

I got a hood with my Sigma lens and will be spening money on a quality CP filter and a good UV as well but I don't think I want to just have the UV on there for the heck of it.
