It really is a shame they can't make cameras and lenses they way they used to.
My dad has a ton of FD-era gear. Three bodies and numerous lenses. They are all tanks, you could probably play football with them and not have to worry about any damage. Im thinking of looking into getting some high-quality lenses for them (since they are fairly cheap nowadays) and doing some more film work in addition to my digital.
I was doing some shooting from the back of a moving car once (with the tailgate open), we bounced over a pothole and I dropped the camera. It hit the road, bounced and rolled along for some distance. The lens glass was toast but the barrel was fine and still zoomed and focused OK (or at least it would have if the glass was alright, all the movements were fine). Impressively, the camera itself (an A-1) was fine apart from a few new dings in the body. I stuck a different lens on and carried on shooting.
The current equivalent to the A-1 would be my 5D I suppose (The A-1 being the top of the regular cameras, with just the F-1 pro-level body above it). I wonder how my 5D would survive such treatment, hopefully I never have to find out
Frankly, I would never treat the digitals as badly as my old tanks as they wouldn't survive. I have just bought a suction mount for attaching a camera to the side of a car, I don't expect the 5D will ever be attached to it. I may well risk the 20D but only after I have tested it with the A-1 a few times.
