Not sure if this is the right place to post this thread but i am sure an administrator will correct me if i am wrong.

I would like to purchase ND grad filters for landscape shots. What are the essentials, i have seen a post somewhere that stated a 'P' type would be the correct choice for a 17-40L on a 20d- if i were to upgrade my body to a full frame would it make a difference to my filters, i dont want to have to replace filters as they appear to be expensive.

I know you have to have a screw in mount, an adaptor and then the lens?

Also what would you recommend to start with in terms of filters- or does anyone know of a filter kit that cokin make? I like the idea of slide in filters as it offers that chance to try out some new crazy effects. Anyone out there have experience with this type of filter, if so i would like your advice please. Dont be afraid to go into too much detail as i know nothing abot this area.
I would like to know what you keep your lenses in as i here the slide in filters scratch easily, and i would also like to know what type of filter you went for, i think there are 4 types of cokin filter series- so answers on a postcard, thanks for respons in advance.

I am looking for a Cokin GND filter setup as well, except that I am gonna use it on my 24-105. I might get a 10-22 in the future, so hopefully someone knowledgable can suggest a setup that will work for all these lenses.

You can use the Cokin P holder - get the wide angle one. Personally, I use Singh Ray grads (external link). Cokin's grads have a reputation of not being neutral so they'll put a bit of a colour cast to your shots. And the wide angle one should work fine on the 17-40 on a FF body as well.

I would avoid the Cokin ND and GND filters... They're not truly neutral and will give your images a color cast... Stick with Lee, HiTech, etc.

The Cokin filter holders are great though.

I'm going with Hi-Tech filters myself, seems to be a reasonable compromise between Cokin and Lee. There's a great thread in the landscapes section on these systems right now, lots of good reading, go here:

If by "fringing" you mean vignetting, it depends on the lens and which holder you get. Cokin makes one for wide-angle lenses which shouldn't vignette on the 17-40.

On your 20D the regular type Cokin P series should work fine with the 17-40.

Unless you plan on sticking 2 filters in the holder, the Cokin Wide Angle P Adapter (external link) is a good buy.

As mentioned earlier, the Cokin ND grads are not true ND but are 'grey grads', but, IMO for the money, they are fine.
If you want 'proper' ones, go for Lee, but you may have to rob a bank first :-)

i respect people opinions about cokin not bein neutral but i think i will get the cokin adaptor and 2 filters, to see if i am any good before shelling out for lee filters, the lee filters will fit cokin adaptor and holder right:?!? does anyone have a bad opinion about cokin adaptor and holder- or is it just the glass that they are poor on lol ;)

There is nothing wrong with the Cokin filters as such, I've been very pleased with my ND grads. I'm sure you will be happy with them, particularly for the money.
The Lee filters are the same size as far as I can remember and I'm sure they will fit the Cokin holder (check before buying if I were you though..)

You'll end up buying real filters down the road anyway because of the colorization, so why not do it right the first time? ;)

Don't forget HiTech. They're not that expensive.
