For all you fellow tri-staters (or other's that have been to Pro-football games) are you allowed to bring your SLR's into the stadium? Will you be hassled by security and be forced to leave the camera in the car? ACK!

Anyone have any experience with this? Or am I going to have to call the stadium security, and check, before I go. This will be the FIRST time that I will be going to a pro-football game...and would love to grab the 300mm & 70-200 and watch the game, and get pictures whilst I am there.

Well, looks like I answered the question. I called the security people at Giants Stadium...and the individual on the phone said it's probably not wise to bring it. He said I could bring a 35mm camera, but the 300mm would not fly, due to the length of the lens.

He also stated that I might not want to 'chance' it, so, guess it will be the point and click that goes with us. Bummer. I just can't stand P&S cameras...but, will use what I can.

This is the policy for Cleveland Stadium as posted on their website. Leaves a lot open to interpretation.

CAMERA POLICY
Cameras and video cameras (camcorders) are allowed but must not interfere with another fan’s enjoyment of the game. The images reproduced may not be used commercially. Video cameras may not be used to reproduce the game.

I would think that you could take the 5D and the 70-200, and the 1.4x TC, but I would leave the 300mm at home. I've used the equivalent of that setup at rugby games in Murrayfield stadium.

There are lots of venues that will confiscate that sort of equipment at the door. As much-discussed here, it depends on the venue and the event -- the same venue can have differing camera policies for different events. Sports events are often governed by pre-existing contracts between the venue and the league. Arts/music acts often dictate their own terms.

must not interfere with another fan’s enjoyment of the game.

I know that when I get going with my camera I sort of lose all sense of reality around me. I'm sort of in my own little world.

I can imagine that most people wouldn't want to be stuck beside someone who's primary interest may seem to be taking pictures instead of enjoying the game. Even a body with a 70-200 on it can be obtrusive to persons around you. Elbows start to knock others, I know, I've been there for an NBA game.

I think my experience there told me that while it is nice to have a shot or two from the game that I would leave the gear at home in the future. Given that there is not much you can do with the images after the fact given the licensing requirements mentioned above. If I go again I will just enjoy the sporting activity.

I have looked at a few different websites for different venues around North America. Generally it is long lenses that are restricted but in most cases they have it worded in such a fashion that they are trying to suggest you leave the big guns at home.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Right on...didn't take the 5D, and was kinda glad I didn't. I enjoyed the game, and the Giants won!!!!!!!

My brother and I spent some time taking pictures with the A610 and had a great time talking to other fans. Awesome time, nice conditions, and a generally good bunch of people.

Enjoy.
