I was playing around with my new 580ex. I'm also using my new (ahem, refurbished ;) ) 20D that I got this week. Out of the pics I took of my son, these three turned out a little 'wacky.' I'm assuming it has something to do with the flash, but I'm not sure what. Sorry for being such a newbie to the speedlite world.

Can you help?

I was shooting in RAW, M mode, and had the 580 set on ETTL

I don't think it's anything to do with the flash. Try a different CF card. Try taking more pic with/without the flash.

Oh dear, I've never seen anything like that before using my flash. I'm no expert, but I suspect that's a faulty flash or 20D.

Have you still got your 300D? I would put your 580ex on it and blast off quite a few shots, using the same lens you had on your 20D. If it doesn't repeat, then I would start to suspect the 20D.

The only time I've ever had trouble with a flash is when I didn't quite attach it properly, but the results weren't anything like that. Also I suspect if it wasn't attached properly all your shots would have been defective.

What does anybody else think?

I've seen shots like those on POTN before...I think it turned out to be a faulty card...

Run some tests w/a new card, using the flash...see what happens. Also test the old card in 300D too...

What make is your flash card ?

I'm sure others on here will direct you to the info on the web about how to tell if your compact flash card is genuine or not.

as just recently the market has been flooded with fakes manufactured to look exactly like the original item.

by the way it does look the card is the problem in my view.

There you go Trish, told you I was no expert! Good news if it is only the card.

my flash card is a Kingston card. I would be surprised if it's not genuine. I bought it in July from newegg.com/
