I bought a Transcend 4GB (120X) card from newegg.com and paid $65. Great card, no problems yet.

Look into them...

Same here. I've been using my Sandisk Ultra II 1GB card for a year now and it has always performed flawlessly and quickly. Not terribly expensive either.

If a Kingston's failed on you, it's probably just really bad luck. Are memory cards not pence in the US, they are over here at the moment?

Yup, if it is the card the price on cards is quite low right now.

Did the refubed 20D come with any warranty?

it's mainly the most expensive makes that have been faked for obvious reasons.

not heard of this problem with kingston.

well, I didn't purchase a warranty with it (maybe I should have?) but here's what it says on B&H's website about purchasing used:

All used equipment is guaranteed to work, regardless of its cosmetic condition. Used photo equipment is guaranteed for 90- days from date of purchase and has a 14-day return privilege (less shipping). Used Video/Imaging items come with a 30-day "Parts and Labor" warranty, excluding video heads, and may be returned within 7 days for a full refund (less shipping).

B&H will honor that warranty too...so test your camera/card as much as possible so you know which it is (I still think it's the card but it's nice the camera is guaranteed too).

How often do you reformat the card?

If you don't do it regularly little faults can build up, formatting tells the card to check for any faulty sectors and seal them off. If it is only on a few shots, formatting should locate them and shut them off, getting rid of the problem and letting you keep using the card without further problems.

(Get all your images off first of course) ;)

I format the card in the camera everytime I turn the camera on and start shooting. Is that enough? Or should I be formatting the card in the pc, as well?

Aaah.

In that case it looks like a faulty camera, it's unlikely two cards would exhibit the same problem. It could be why the previous owner traded it in.

Out of interest, what image folder number is it up to? (the images are saved in 100 image lots in individual folders). That should give an idea of number of shutter actuations.

just took some shots on the second card again, and shot only in jpg. Got no corrupted files. Will keep shooting . . .

I wonder if it concerns my card reader?

No, don't format it in the PC the camera probably won't recognise it and you would still have to format it in camera. It sounds like you work the same way I do, using 'format', rather than 'erase', each time you clear the card. That's fine and should give maximum reliability.
