Plug the camera into the computer via the USB cable and open up EOS utility (or whatever the 20D uses). Select "Camera settings/remote shooting".

Take a few shots and tell us what you see. Make sure you have no card in the camera, just to completely eliminate that possibility.

it's up to 899 in the folder images when shooting in RAW

If that is folder 899, it's done about 80,000 shots so is about ready for a shutter failure. Folders start at 100, so it's filled 799 folders with 100 images in each. RAW doesn't matter, it's 100 shots per folder, regardless of RAW, Jpeg or both.

I always understood the 20D to be good for about 100,000 shots, which is a vague average, they may last much longer or fail well before. However the new 30D claimed to have shutter life 'improved' to 100,000 - suggesting the 20D is actually less. Mine has a bit over 70,000 on it and I have recently bought a 5D to replace it, just in case of impending shutter failure, as I don't want a terminal failure at an important shoot. I still use the 20D as a second body though.

It looks like it may have been traded in because it's starting to fail. B&H probably took a few test shots, during which it didn't show the problem, so sold it straight on. If it had been properly refurbished a faulty shutter should have been replaced.

I would exercise that 14 day return if I were you.

Good idea. Also, have a quick chimp at the image on the 20Ds LCD screen and see if it looks the same. I'm assuming you can do this with RAW shots on a 20D, I can on my 30D.

okay, here's some more info:

the pics that show up corrupted on the pc do NOT show up corrupted on the camera. Also, the problem seems to ONLY occur when I shoot in RAW

I'm beginning to wonder if it's my card reader . . . .

Okay, here's even MORE info. The corrupted files are only appearing when I use AdobeBridge to view the photos. When I look at the photos using EOS Viewer Utility, they look fine. What the heck is going on?

did you try hooking up your camera to the computer (bypassing the card reader) and seeing how they download?

ACTUALLY, now that I look even closer, the images appear to be fine in EOS viewer, but when I click on them, they ARE in fact showing the weird pink line.

Can you connect the camera direct to the PC and download from that, from the cards with the faulty images, rather than using the card reader. If the images are still faulty, it won't be the card reader, if they download properly however it looks like you may have the culprit.

Do you still have the old camera body? Trying that and downloading through the card reader should help with identifying the problem.

How do I download RAW files from the camera? It's not letting me do a thing except it acts like it doesn't SEE the RAW files on the camera.

Did you load the Viewer, etc, for the 20D or are you still using your older software? It makes a difference.

yep, just tried a third card, and got one file that's like that. HOWEVER - only the raw file is corrupted. The jpg of the same file is fine.

Seems like corrupted files... Have you ever done a clean format of the CF card via the camera?
