I have had that exact same problem with a 30D (brand new) and a Lexar 1GB Pro 80X card. No problem on others CFs so far (even Lexar 2GB Pro 133X).
After investigation, it turns out that the problem comes from the firmware of the card. It is a known issue, happening on other Canon Digital SLRs (20D, 1D series, etc.).
You should check with the card manufacturer if they are aware of it. If so, they should RMA your card at no cost.
I hope that'll help.

She had it happen on two different cards. Don't know if they are the same type/firmware though.

If that is folder 899, it's done about 80,000 shots so is about ready for a shutter failure. Folders start at 100, so it's filled 799 folders with 100 images in each. RAW doesn't matter, it's 100 shots per folder, regardless of RAW, Jpeg or both.

I always understood the 20D to be good for about 100,000 shots, which is a vague average, they may last much longer or fail well before. However the new 30D claimed to have shutter life 'improved' to 100,000 - suggesting the 20D is actually less. Mine has a bit over 70,000 on it and I have recently bought a 5D to replace it, just in case of impending shutter failure, as I don't want a terminal failure at an important shoot. I still use the 20D as a second body though.

It looks like it may have been traded in because it's starting to fail. B&H probably took a few test shots, during which it didn't show the problem, so sold it straight on. If it had been properly refurbished a faulty shutter should have been replaced.

I would exercise that 14 day return if I were you.

no its not.

The 20D and 250D reset after 1000 shots. If the image number is 899 then its taken either 899, 10899, 20899 etc. If the folder number is 899 then it is likely to be around 8-9000 photos taken.

Only the 30D+ count higher than 10,000 in the file numbers.

That should say 10,000 shots shouldn't it.;)

Yeah, no way that is an issue with the flash... unless it is short circuiting your camera. (not likely).

I would try a different reader. One thing are you shooting in burst mode? If so your 20d may be miss writing the files or gumbaling the data together??
