I am not totally happy with #1 as I would have really liked to get some detail in the leaves and wish I had tried using the 300D's flash to help out, is there anything I could have done differently? comments and critisism is very much welcomed.

the tree does look a bit dark, but the castle shot looks nice. like the colors.

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

The only thing I can think of would be to take the picture at a different time of the day (sunrise/sundown) when the sky wouldn't be so bright... The luminosity difference between sky/leaves would then be reduced... A flash would have made it look unnatural and less interesting I think... But I'm no expert. ;)

I prefer the second shot, and like montreal, I think that the first one would have worked better at sunset. I also think that there is just too much dark area framing to the shot, as the castle (and nice bit of water) are such a small section of the composition.

cheers for all the comments they will as always be taken on board and I will become a competant photographer.... One day!

I have thought about purchasing a better camera to try and help me but I have been told this is not a good idea, I should learn the camera I have (300D) then move up to a 30D or something.

I know what you mean. I have the 350D and wonder about the 30D or 5D, but then sensibility leaps in and points out that my current camera is perfectly capable, and perhaps only when there are features of the other cameras that I can justify (and my skills are better) then will I buy another camera.
