Well I did it .... the winner was the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. Ordered from B&H will be here in 2 days. Thanks for all the info and knowledge from all. I love this web-site!

Extremely sharp lens, I have one... Though it doesn't bear the 'L' it is the best non 'L' lens I have used and can match my 'L' class lenses for quality...

I'm curious why you decided on the 85 f/1.8 over the 50 f/1.4. The 85 is a great lens by all accounts but on your 30D it will be equivalent to a 136mm lens which may be too long for many indoor shots. Hopefully you gave that some thought.

The difference between f/1.4 and f/1.8 is VERY small.

to me the difference is huge. just the bokeh alone on the 1.4 is so much better than on the 1.8.
