This is a complete newbie question  but I couldn't find a definitive answer upon searching. I just want to know because in the next few weeks I hope to pick up the 17-40L.

Can you use both a filter and the lens hood at the same time or is it only one at a time? With not getting into the debate I was just thinking about double protection of the lens - UV filter w/ hood. I also will probably be using a polarizer a bit.

Thanks for your help!

both is okay, but try not to stack filters, and with the hood it'll be hard to turn the polarizer.

A good quality protective filter such as B&W UV MRC is essential to ensure long term well being of your lens.
The hood is a dud. Might as well not bother with it. You really need to shoot carefully w.r.t. strong light sources, shield the lens with your hand, hat etc as required, and also depending on how critical a shot is.

Actually, hoods are great so you don't accidentally bump your lens into anything. A crack in your filter is bad, a crack in the lens is worse, but no crack is best! Say no to crack, use a hood...

Buffy, please try to concentrate......we ain't talking hoods in general in this thread.

We are talking about the hood which is intended for three EF lens models none of which I can find in your signature.:D

The hood that ships with the 17-40L is next to useless - it also fits the 10-22 and the 16-35 .

With a crop camera you can get far more satisfactory shading of the lens and protection from the EW-83D/2 which is the hood designed for the EF 24mm f/1.8 L

I have one of these and got it from an Ebay seller in Hong Kong for about half the UK price.

You can also use the hood for the EF 24-105mm f/4 L - the EW-83 H

BTW, I also use Hoya Pro 1 D multicoated, designed for digital UV filters to protect the front element, and in the case of the 17-40L, a filter is advised by Canon to complete weather sealing. If you use a CP you need to take the UV filter off first. Don't over tighten a CP or it won't come off, and using a CP and a hood at the same time is impractical. Use a peice of card to cast a shadow over the lens front if need be.

You can, and should use both. Stick with top quality filters; Heliopan, B+W or Hoya Pro1.
