bah, the reviewer only has 20 posts. he needs at least 2,500 before I will read any of it. I'd still like one.

Since we know all good photographers spend their time posting on forums about pointless crap.......Let's see...we can make 2500 posts or spend the time learning to be a real photographer.

Sorry for the OT

That's interesting... You mean knowledge about photography or experience is somehow related to the time a person spends in forums?

Boys, boys, the reviewer's post count means nothing in this particuklar instance.
The general impression shared here that his review sounds "hollow" is the only thing that does matter.

I echo Steve's thought here....the review could have been written by a partially informed photographer who has never seen a lens let alone used it.

In my opinion, a lens should not be downgraded to "6" unless it has obviously visible optical problems.

LOL very true. However it doesnt actually take long to get lots of posts, just 10 comments a day (or in my case 5) over a year or two is enough to push the count way up.

So in summary

It's not as big as he thought it would be, and it does not focus as fast as he would like.

What a good review:lol:

Thanks for the approval PetKal - it means a lot! Really!

As for the post count issue, my post count reflects merely the fact that i spend a lot of time at the computer on night call, waiting for the phone to ring. and I'm quite opinionated and can type fairly fast. And have little better to do at times.....

I wish my photography skills were at a level to place me among the masters - but I'd never equate a post count with knowledge. I do take Bolantej's point tho - his was a tongue-in-cheek comment made about a review that we all feel is pretty spurious.

Everyone knows that people with only 20 posts in any forum can barely wipe their own ****

I mught have guessed that a review that didn't give the lens a 10 would draw negative comment.
Its not a great review, but as i've said before, the price indicates something special. Maybe the reviewer felt for the money it should be closer to ideal than he feels it is.

IMHO, its virtually impossible for this one to justify its cost unless its a seriously outstanding lens. As for the comment on focus speed, thats nonsense. Some of Canons fastest and most accurately focusing lenses are the big guns. This one should zip along like the 35/1.4 at the very least.

Based on this review I am never buying the 50mm f1.2 L. Like come on no floating element? Slow focus speed? No way! Thanks reviewer you saved me a lot of time and money. (This is assuming I was ever buying this lens in the first place)

I think you are right there. An outstanding lens to me also means "outstanding thruout its operating aperture values, starting with the nominal aperture". A lens which is "outstanding" only when stopped down 2 stops, needs (ideally) to be re-rated and its price should drop (ideally) like a stone.
The key to a relatively huge popularity the 85L has enjoyed over almost past two decades, despite issues like CA, is that the lens is quite well performing at its nominal aperture.

However, as far as AF speed is concerned, I am often at a loss regarding people's expectations .......even if the lens AF drive speed turns out to be just comparable to the old EF 50 f/1.4.......how would that diminish the utility and value of the new lens ?
